Roots and wings, wings and roots
One likes soil, the other likes boots
One grows weary and one grows shoots
Roots and wings, wings and roots.
Wngs and roots, roots and wings
One gets torn between these things
So she is and so she sings,
“Wings and roots, roots and wings.”
Grasp at the knee and grasp at the elbow
One ran free, the other knelt low
Rolling on the ground to the sound of thunder
One hand above, the other hand under.
Keep it down deep so no one can steal it
One hand to hide, the other to reveal it
Feed it to him slowly so he can feel it
One kiss to start, another to seal it.
Bind it with twine but stop when it strangles
Fortune will mold and fortune will mangle
Keep a straight path but curve when it crumbles
One foot to stand and one foot to stumble.
Grip on the wheel and press on the pedal
Smelling of melting marrow and metal
Breath so slow just so it can know you
One hand above and one hand below you.
One arises from the deepest well
One alights from the highest bell
Look for me at the point where they dwell.

Wraith, will you fade away?
Evaporate like the water you claim to imitate?
Wraith, will you run away?
Wrap up your life with a knife or a rope with the hope of escape?
Where will you run to?
Your burden comes with you
Drop your phantom form and float free
What good will it do?
Your burden clings to you
Drop your phantom likeness, fight this!

One night I came upon a thing of scale and fur deep in the shadowed boreal of Black Lake. With no hunger unwholesomer, it asked my sacrifice. I only laughed and left as it’s vexations sped my feet.
Next night I came with offerings to find all parts where teeth could reach devoured, bones in strings. My eyes fell upon my pale, wasting skin and then I turned and left my home in search of fresher winds.
Nursed it, fed it, fed too well
Grown so much it eats itself
Nothing else is left to eat
The creature eats the creature’s meat
Beast is now the beast’s own burden
It consumes, lost and uncertain
Aimless, it’s motive perverted
Herd of one cannot be herded
Wounded though it feels no sting
The bird’s beak tears the bird’s own wing
Soon the cycle will complete
The creature eats the creature’s meat.
